Growing up in a household where my parents always listened to music from ‘their era’, I have always been a huge Beatles fan. So when I saw that Cirque du Soleil had a show in Las Vegas called The Beatles LOVE, I just had to book tickets for my sister and I…
Located at The Mirage, LOVE has been showing since 2006 in a purpose-built theatre that is believed to have cost $100 million. The 360-degree seating around the stage means you can easily see the performers from any angle – even if you can only afford the budget-priced seats!
The show loosely covers The Beatles biography, from their beginnings in Liverpool, their climb to super stardom, their spiritual awakenings, and their tumultuous breakup. Their joyful reunion (which the show represents) is then the finale.
Throughout the show, the audience also meets the various characters from The Beatles songs – think Eleanor Rigby, Lady Madonna, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds, Sgt Pepper and Mr Kite – people we all feel as though we know!
Being Cirque du Soleil, the 60 performers showcase these characters through amazing dance and acrobatic routines. Combined with amazing costumes and colourful props, LOVE is a show that would be, well, loved by all.
Without having read too much about the show before I went, I was a little worried that a live band would try (and fail) to imitate The Beatles’ unique music. However, I was relieved to hear their original tunes belt out of the theatre’s 6341 speakers.
The highlight of our night? An usher showing us some LOVE by upgrading our tickets to the VIP section! However I don’t think the man next to me was impressed with our good fortune – the poor guy had to listen to me sing every Beatles lyric that was played during the show. Did I mention I can’t sing?
Nevertheless, fine readers, this random act of kindness showed me that LOVE really IS all you need!
